What
is a domain name?
Most computers connected to the Internet are identified by a unique number
called an IP address (for instance, 234.208.12.129). If you type the IP
address into the URL bar of your browser you will be taken to the web
site it relates to. As well as being hard to remember, however, IP addresses
are also FIXED (i.e. if you change web hosting companies you'll need to
get a new IP address for your site). Domain names offer a more intuitive
way to name and find a website. Each domain name replaces a string of
meaningless numbers (an IP address) with a simple word or expression.
How
is the domain registration process handled?
If you have registered a domain name and setup a hosting account with
Burningbulb the process is very easy. Upon completion of the order Burningbulb
will setup your hosting account with domain name and have you're site
up and running within 28-48 hours. If you've registered a domain through
Burningbulb but don't want us to host it, the DNS tables take about 24-48
hours to update and tie in with whatever Primary and Secondary DNS you
have chosen.
When
can I use my domain name?
Upon successful registration/transfer of a domain name their is a 24-48
hour update period. During this time the DNS tables worldwide are updated
to reflect your sites new location. Once this period is complete the site
will then resolve correctly and can be visited at the specified domain
name. Before the domain name has been resolved all active hosting accounts
can only be visited via their IP address.
How
do I get my existing domain name to work with my new hosting account?
To have your domain work with you nre hosting account you will need to
update the Domain Name Servers (DNS) for your domain name. This is done
through the registrar of your domain name, or the company that you purchased
the domain name through. The required name server information can be found
by clicking here.
How
long does a domain name transfer usually take?
Name server updates usually take somewhere between 24 and 72 hours to
fully propogate throughout the Internet.
I
can't remember the password for my domain name, can you transfer it anyway?
No, you will need to provide us with the password on your domain names
account
What
is a parked domain?
A parked domain is when you have two or more domains pointed at the same
IP address. If for example you owned mydomain.com but wanted to also have
mydomain.net and mydomain.org pointing to your primary IP address you
could park them on top of mydomain.com. As a result all of the domains
would point to the same IP address so that no matter which domain name
you entered you would always go to the same site. To park a domain name
on a site you are currently hosting with Burningbulb please contact Burningbulb
Customer Service.
Can
I mirror a domain to my main domain?
Yes. Mirroring a domain name is the same as parking a domain name. To
park a domain name on a site you are currently hosting with Burningbulb
please call Burningbulb Customer Service.
Can
I host two domain names on one account with both names pointing to the
same IP?
Yes. This is called domain parking where two different domains point to
the exact same IP address or website. To park a domain name on a site
you are currently hosting with Burningbulb please call Burningbulb Customer
Service.
How
many domains can I park on my account?
You can park a maximum of 10 domains per site on the Burningbulb servers.
Can
I have email using a parked domain names extension?
Yes. You may receive email mailed to a parked domain names extension.
However, you cannot send mail from a parked domain name extension. This
is because of the reverse DNS requirements.
Is
it possible to have a virtual domain that points to a directory in my
account?
Yes. You can have a virtual domain pointing to a directory within your
site. To set this up please open a Burningbulb Technical Support ticket.
Can
I add subdomains to my domain (ie. support.mydomain.com)?
No, Burningbulb does not support subdomains. However, you can setup a
secondary account under your main account that would function in much
the same way. The only difference would be the new sub account, support.mydomain.com,
would come with its own Unix user ID and control panel.
I
ordered www.mydomain.com but you setup mydomain.com. Is there a difference?
The Burningbulb servers treat both www.domain.com and domain.com the same
way. Therefore regardless of what you type you will find the desired website
or IP address.
Do
you provide personalized name servers?
No. Currently Burningbulb does not personalize name servers.
